I’m a retired paramedic and hobbyist programmer. Back in the 1990s, I played guitar and considered myself to be pretty good. Eventually, life took me in a different direction. I put the guitar down, went back to school, started my career, and, like many of us, was forced to become an adult.
After retiring, I suddenly found myself with something I hadn’t had much of in years—free time. I decided to pick up the guitar again and rediscover something I had once truly enjoyed.
It didn’t take long for me to realize that a lot had changed since the ’90s. The guitar itself was still familiar, but the technology surrounding it was almost an entirely different world. I was quickly introduced to modern amp modelers, digital effects, software-based amp simulations, and all the possibilities they bring to today’s guitarist.
I was incredibly excited when I finally got my Helix, but that enthusiasm was somewhat short-lived—because now I actually had to learn how to use it.
At first, it was a little overwhelming. I found myself struggling to recreate the guitar tones I remembered and loved from my youth. I experimented with different approaches, watched tutorials, tried countless settings, and explored various ways of getting those familiar sounds, but I was never quite 100% satisfied with the results.
Eventually, I started looking into software that could help simplify the process. The problem was that many of the solutions I found were extremely expensive.
Being a retired paramedic basically means every day is Friday—you just don’t have any money to enjoy it. Some of this software was so far outside my budget and I couldn’t even afford a free cup of ramen noodles.
So, being a hobbyist programmer, I started wondering: Could I just build something myself?
I initially built Chameleon Tone Match for myself. But once I saw what it could do, I decided to turn it into something anyone could afford and, more importantly, something anyone could use. My goal was simple: make tone matching easy while producing a high-quality Tone-Matched EQ that actually sounds like the tone you’re trying to recreate.
After plenty of trial and error, Chameleon Tone Match was born.
Today, I’m not only enjoying the tones of my youth again—I’ve rediscovered the joy of playing guitar. And if Chameleon Tone Match can help someone else spend less time chasing a tone and more time actually playing, then building it was worth it.
